Champions League betting heats up this week as we enter the knockout stages, with Chelsea visiting PSG and Real Madrid at Schalke. As this season’s Champions League reaches the business end, today Michael Cox declares his best bets for Round of 16 Champions League betting.
#1 – Paris SG vs Chelsea
Chelsea Should Enjoy PSG Showdown
Jose Mourinho was delighted when Chelsea drew PSG in the second round of the Champions League – which might seem surprising considering the French champions gave him serious problems at the quarter-final stage last season.
Mourinho’s reasoning was primarily about ease of travel for both club and supporters, but it’s also because he knows PSG have regressed since last season, while his Chelsea side have improved.
Laurent Blanc hasn’t been able to encourage sufficient dynamism from his players this year, with the midfield passing tempo slow, Zlatan Ibrahimovic not at his best, and the defence no more solid following the arrival of David Luiz.

On the other hand, Chelsea have improved significantly: they have more midfield creativity through Cesc Fabregas, goals upfront from Diego Costa and a better goalkeeper in Thibaut Courtois. The January arrival of Juan Cuadrado also provides width and excitement on the right flank. They’re now currently a much superior side to PSG.
The format suits Mourinho, too: he’ll probably defend away from home and be delighted to take a 1-1 draw, for example, back to Stamford Bridge. Even his attacking selections could be about defending: Oscar might be used for his ability to mark Marco Verratti, with Ramires or Willian on the right to provide defensive balance. Eden Hazard will be the main attacking threat, and against the attack-minded Gregory van der Viel, will fancy his chances of countering at speed.
Best Bet: Drawn 1st Leg
Chelsea should win the tie in the second leg, and I think Mourinho will regard a draw away in Paris as a great result. At 3.30 (23/10) with SkyBet, a first leg draw looks good value.

#2 – Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid
Real Might Batter Schalke
Real Madrid have wobbled in recent weeks, suffering defeats to Valencia and Atletico Madrid – the latter being a 4-0 thrashing that sent shockwaves around Europe. But
