The FA Cup is always a nice break from the league for English clubs and as we approach the business end of the knockout competition, the quarter-final draw has produced some potentially absorbing fixtures.Everton, who knocked out Swansea in the fifth round by a scoreline of 3-1, have been drawn away from home against either Arsenal or Liverpool who play this afternoon – a potential Merseyside derby if Liverpool at victorious at the Emirates.
Sunderland beat Southampton at the Stadium of Light by a solitary Craig Gardner screamer, and the cups appear to providing welcome distraction from the league where they haven’t really actualised their potential so far this season. As well as looking forward to a Capital One Cup Wembley showdown with powerhouses Manchester City, they will face an away match against either Brighton or Hull as they look to perhaps win their first trophy since claiming the Championship title in 2007.
Manchester City gained revenge against Chelsea for their two league defeats to the Blues, and the Mancunian outfit will now contest an FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan Athletic, who claimed another Premier League scalp against Cardiff, at the Etihad Stadium. This will be a repeat of last year’s FA Cup final where Wigan shocked viewers to take the trophy, winning 1-0 in the final thanks to a Ben Watson header in the 90th minute.
Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Charlton at Hillsborough was postponed yesterday due to a waterlogged pitch and the winners of that replay will face Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest away from home. United and Forest are currently playing out their fifth round tie.
