5 Things We Learned From Epsom 2025
After two thrilling days of high class racing at Epsom, today Stephen Harris takes a look back and gives us 5 things we learned from the 2025 Epsom Derby and Oaks.
#1- Australia is the “superstar” that his excellent trainer has talked of throughout the year
Aidan O’Brien’s view of Australia as “the best horse I have ever trained” was fully vindicated as the well-backed 11-8f impressively landed the confidence. Joesph O’Brien rode a patient race in a contest run at only an ordinary gallop, and smoothly made up the ground from mid-division to assert inside the final furlong (idling in front as the game Kingston Hill rallied). He looks sure to take the beating at Group 1 level going forwards, with a potent mix of stamina and speed, coupled with plenty of improvement that is sure to be forthcoming as he matures.

The runner-up appeals as a St Leger type, although was perfectly placed throughout (close third and out of trouble) and had no excuses on the day, while further back in the pack Arod caught the eye and could benefit from dropping back to a mile (has plenty of speed now his natural exuberance has been tamed).
