Sheffield United are down in 20th after starting the season as one of the favourites to win the league. They’ve missed out on promotion in the play-offs for the last two years and maybe that, coupled with the loss of players like Ched Evans, has left them struggling towards the bottom.

Nigel Clough was brought in to turn things around and while they have improved slightly, they just aren’t winning enough matches. The Blades are currently unbeaten in six, but only two of those were victories, and at Bramall Lane it’s just one win in four.

Tranmere made a flying start last season but folded in the second half of the campaign to finish 11th. They have continued on that downward spiral this term as they’re down in 19th place – ahead of today’s opponents by just a single point.

Ronnie Moore’s men did end a run of three successive defeats on Boxing Day by beating Shrewsbury at New Meadow and that will certainly give them a boost ahead of their second away trip in the space of four days. Their form isn’t actually too bad away from Prenton Park as they’ve avoided defeat in five of their last seven on the road – including victories at Bradford, Coventry and the aforementioned Shrewsbury.

The hosts simply can’t be trusted to take all three points, so at around the 1.768/11 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.
