Against All Odds: End of an era in Portugal

Betting Tips | Article posted on February 16th, 2025

“A further concern has to be their recent away form as it's three defeats from their last four in the league as they were beaten to nil at Académica, Benfica and Marítimo.”
Lay Porto v Gil Vicente @ 1.292/7

Reigning Portuguese champions Porto are long-odds on for their trip to Gil Vicente this evening but Paul Robinson thinks they could come unstuck, and all the action is available on Betfair Live Video at 19:15 GMT.
Gil Vicente are on a terrible winless streak that hasn’t seen them record a victory inside normal time since the beginning of March – a spell of 14 matches in all competitions. They were knocked out of both domestic cups by Benfica and having picked up just two points from a possible 27 in the Primeira Liga, they have dropped to 12th.
There are some positives to take for João de Deus’ side though as they’ve only lost twice on home turf this season and last time out at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos they held Benfica to a 1-1 draw. Four of their eight there have resulted in victories and a further positive is that they are unbeaten against tonight’s opponents in their last three in front of their own fans.
Porto haven’t had one of their greatest seasons to date thus far and while they’re only four points off the pace, they seem to be on the decline. The loss of manager Vítor Pereira didn’t help but new man Paulo Fonseca has been hindered by the departure of key players – namely João Moutinho.
The Dragons were dire in their Champions League campaign and they exited at the group stage having won just a single match. A further concern has to be their recent away form as it’s three defeats from their last four in the league as they were beaten to nil at Académica, Benfica and Marítimo. They did beat Rio Ave but they they’ve also been held at Belenenses and Estoril since the end of September.
There is no disputing the fact that Porto should be the favourites to win this match but they are far from a sure thing and their price seems much too short. All things considered, at around the 1.292/7 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.
