Vitoria Guimaraes have slipped to sixth in the Primeira Liga following a run of results that has seen them take just three points from a possible 12. A victory at home to Rio Ave was the sole highlight as they were beaten at Vitoria Setubal and Benfica, and defeated in front of their own fans by Nacional.
Nevertheless, Rui Vitoria’s side are only four points adrift of the Europa League places and with plenty of games still to go, they have enough time to get their season back on track. Clearly they face a tough task in the shape of Porto this evening but they have at least avoided defeat in four of their last six at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques. It is also worth noting that their last three losses on home soil were by a single goal only.
Porto scraped through to the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday as they struck late in Germany to qualify on away goals. I appreciate the fact that Porto have an incredible recent record against their opponents – 10 wins out of 10 – but they aren’t quite the force of old and Vitoria Guimaraes have a great opportunity to make it 11th time lucky. Therefore with Porto trading as low as 1.584/7, I have to make them my lay of the day.
