Wigan Athletic face the prospect of coming back to earth with a truly unceremonious bump after winning the first trophy in their history at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The newly crowned FA Cup winners will unfortunately be relegated from the Premier League if they fail to pick up at least a point from this trip to the Emirates Stadium.

It would be nice for the Latics to be able to rely on Arsenal not needing the points from this fixture, but unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. Should Arsenal fail to win here then their chances of finishing in the top four places, and obtaining a Champions League slot for next season, are slim at best. Thus, Wigan can expect absolutely no favours from the Gunners, and will have to reproduce their Wembley form if they are to earn the point that would at least give them a mathematical hope of redemption during the final weekend of the season.

Realistically, Wigan need to win this game to stand any chance of staying up, as their goal difference dictates that being three points behind Sunderland with one game to go would be basically useless. So their task at the Emirates in this game is a truly massive one. But Wigan can perhaps take a little solace from their performance against last season’s champions Manchester City just days ago, and should they reproduce this then another unlikely escape from the drop zone could yet be accomplished.

Arsenal are likely to recall Jack Wilshere for this fixture, with the midfielder having been rested in favour of Tomas Rosicky in previous fixtures. Olivier Giroud is also available for selection again, and will almost certainly lead the line. Wigan may freshen up the team that beat Manchester City with a couple of changes. Wembley hero Ben Watson may feature.

I think this season will be the one in which Wigan finally perish. I tipped QPR, Norwich and Wigan to go down at the start of the season, and it looks as if two from those three will drop down to the Championship. Arsenal will be too good for Wigan, who will give it a good go at the Emirates, but two big wins against two of the best teams in the country in three days is too much to ask for.
