Can Bale and Ronaldo Really Flourish Together?
Gareth Bale’s fledgling Real Madrid career has been interrupted by injuries, and thus the Los Blancos faithful are yet to see the best of the former Tottenham winger. But last night’s 1-0 defeat for Real at home to their city rivals and neighbours Atletico will lead some observers to wonder whether a Bale-Ronaldo dyad on the wings can truly be a successful partnership, or whether such a combination leaves Real too vulnerable defensively.
It was quite clear from the get go that Atletico intended to sit deep and hit Real on the break. When Bale came on at half time for the Argentinian Angel di Maria, this tactic became even more effective, with Real struggling to break Atletico down, while being picked off continually on the counter-attack. It was food for thought for Carlo Ancelotti as he attempts to forge a Real Madrid system which accommodates the world’s two most expensive players.
