Barcelona Defender Search Goes On
One would think that being one of the world’s biggest, wealthiest and most prestigious clubs, along with being the reigning La Liga champions, would be enough to attract players to your club. But Barcelona have suffered a series of disappointment this summer as they seek to strengthen a backline which it is perceived cost them at times last season.
Their first apparent target, Thiago Silva, has already confirmed that he will be staying the French capital with PSG for at least one more season. Now their second major target, Chelsea’s David Luiz, looks to be staying put as well, with Jose Mourinho having told goal that the Brazilian central defender, and occasional defensive midfield player, was not for sale. Just days previously, Caught Offside had reported that Luiz was desperate to secure a switch to the Camp Nou, but this possibility now appears to be dead.
Figures from inside the club have commented on Barca’s defensive search. Gerard Pique was reported by Sports Mole as stating that it is difficult for Barca to buy suitable players due to their unique style of play, while Barcelona’s sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, has insisted that the club is in no hurry to sign a defender.
