The leading teams from the two traditional football powerhouse nations of Italy and Germany meet in the last eight of the Champions League, as Bayern Munich play host to Juventus at the Allianz Arena. Both clubs look likely to secure their domestic titles this term; in the case of Bayern the Bundesliga has been an utter formality this season, as exemplified by their last league fixture in which they put nine goals past SV Hamburg despite resting several players.

Juventus negotiated their first knockout fixture in the this year’s Champions League rather emphatically, beating Celtic in both legs of the last sixteen tie. Bayern had looked an exemplary outfit in the first leg of their tie against Arsenal, winning by three goals to one at the Emirates, but stumbled rather in the home leg, eventually winning on away goals. Since then the German club have certainly got back on track, though, as made emphatically clear by the demolition of Hamburg.

Bayern Munich will certainly go into this tie as favourites, with the Munich-based club being considered one of the favourites to win this season’s Champions League, having lost the final on penalties last season. However, Juventus are a tough side to play against, with arguably the best defensive line-up of any team left in the competition, and one can be absolutely certain that they won’t make it easy for the German champions elect to play their aggressive game.

Both teams are likely to be at full strength, with Chiellini returning to anchor the Juventus defence having been suspended for the first-leg of their tie against Celtic.

I find it very hard to envisage this being anything other than an exceptionally cagey game. Neither side will want to give away a great deal ahead of the second-leg, and Juventus’ performance in the away leg at Celtic – in which they put up a blanket defence at time – gives some indication of how they are likely to approach this game, against a significantly more talented side. I think Bayern might just steal a victory, though, but I don’t expect there to be many goals in this one.
