Betfair Live Video: Wanderers look to heap the pressure on struggling Jets
“With one win in seven appearances (coupled with five defeats), Newcastle have seen themselves drop to eighth in the league, in a rapid decline.”
With an A-League double header, Lewis Watson takes a closer look at the action on Betfair Live Video this Saturday…
Wellington Phoenix vs Adelaide UnitedSaturday 06:30
With eleven games to go in the race for the Aussie accolades, we head to the Westpac Stadium to see whether a revitalised Phoenix can continue their delayed assault on the Final Series places. The visitors have aspirations of their own, and with Josep Gombau’s United going unbeaten in seven, the early season Spanish Inquisition into his leadership is all but a distant, fickle memory.
With a positive start to 2025 achieved for both sides, it could be argued that we are about to watch the two form sides in Australia lock horns. Despite this, Phoenix lost late last weekend to an established Roar outfit in Brisbane, and coach Ernie Merrick will be sure to erase that from his side’s memories as they approach this crucial fixture.
Taking four wins from their last six fixtures hasn’t gone unnoticed Down Under. Since late March, Phoenix have gathered momentum in front of goal, with most of the influence coming from Belgium danger-man and leading goal-scorer, Stein Huysegems.
With eight goals in sixteen appearances, the 31-year-old has used his experience to good use this campaign bullying defenders and causing havoc in the last third.
Although resurgent, Wellington still have a lot of work to do to make the Finals Series, with their dismal start to the season still holding them back.
Taking fifteen points from the last twenty-one available, Adelaide have experienced a similar change in fortunes the past month. Sitting in sixth, and the last Finals Series spot, Gombau’s side are knocking on the doors of the sides in fourth and fifth, having sat in eighth for the majority of the season so far.
Albeit far from ‘prolific’, Adelaide have found their feet in front of goal in recent weeks, giving them the second best attack to date in the league. With Jeronimo Neumann causing a constant threat upfront, his partnership with Spanish striker Cirio will be re-established this weekend as the twenty-eight year old returns from injury.
With Phoenix boasting a fairly impressive home record this season, Adelaide will find it hard to break down the Wellington resistance. Head-to-head’s favour Adelaide strongly, but Gombau’s men may be left short at the back as they go searching for a pivotal three points.
This one won’t disappoint, but should end with a share of the spoils being taken.
