Brazil v Uruguay – Confederations Cup Preview and Betting Tip

Betting Tips | Article posted on June 26th, 2025

Phil Scolari’s much criticised Brazilian team has begun the process of resurrecting its reputation by sailing through Group A with maximum points. But their semi-final against historical foe Uruguay will surely be a more enduring test of their ability than their fixtures thus far.

The nation of Uruguay is stitched indelibly into the history of Brazilian football, most notably due to Uruguay’s 2-1 defeat of hosts Brazil to win the 1950 World Cup – a game immortalised in South America as the ‘Maracanazo’, or Maracana Blow. This fixture has such an iconic place in South American football culture that there have been entire feature films made about the match alone. Uruguay also inflicted Brazil’s heaviest defeat in their history, 6-0 in 1920.

Thus, Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar recently stated that Brazil v Uruguay may be an ever bigger fixture than Brazil v Argentina.

Though Uruguay enjoy an exalted status, considering themselves to be very much part of world football’s aristocracy, their recent years have been relatively lean, and it is Brazil who have dealt them some significant beatings recently. Nonetheless, this current side has the best forward line that they have fielded in recent years, with the much sought after Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani accompanied by the experience of Diego Forlan. The Liverpool striker Suarez’s two strikes against the beleaguered Tahitians meant that he is now the nation’s top international goalscorer in its esteemed history.

This is likely to be a hard fought and niggly game, with neither side wanting to lose to one of its biggest rivals.

Betting Prediction

It’s impossible for me to bet against the Brazilians here. Not only do they have the better side on paper, not only do they have home advantage, but they have the nous of winning on the big occasion, and the confidence that comes from their national pedigree. They walloped Uruguay 4-0 the last time these two teams played, and while I expect this match to be somewhat closer, I still think Brazil will win with something to spare.

Final Scoreline Prediction:Brazil 3 – 1 Uruguay

Other Recommended Bets: Brazil to win Over 2.5 Goals, Both Teams to Score.
