Champions League: Toughest task in European football awaits Arsenal
“Few sides can have so dominated a league as Bayern have the Bundesliga this year – Pep Guardiola’s team have won 22 of 24, drawing the other two, and they warmed up for Tuesday night’s test with a 6-1 thumping of fifth-placed VFL Wolfsburg away from home.”
Saturday brought joy but Tuesday looks like bringing pain to the Arsenal faithful with a trip to the home of Europe’s best team likely to end with European elimination. Joe Dyer looks at the week to come in the Champions League…
The second legs of the Champions League last-16 fixtures begin on Tuesday night when we shall likely see Arsenal depart the competition.
Arsene Wenger’s team go to Germany for what is probably the toughest fixture in European (if not world) club football – Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Few sides can have so dominated a league as Bayern have the Bundesliga this year – Pep Guardiola’s team have won 22 of 24, drawing the other two, and they warmed up for Tuesday night’s test with a 6-1 thumping of fifth-placed VFL Wolfsburg away from home. Away from home!
It’s little surprise then that the hosts are 1.321/3 for the victory, although short price backers need to take into account the fact that, with a 2-0 first leg lead secured, the German side do not need to win and suffered a shock 2-0 defeat in this fixture last year. Ominously perhaps Olivier Giroud, scorer of the opener at the Allianz Arena in 2025, did not start in the FA Cup this weekend but scored twice in a half hour cameo.
That said, classy Bayern will surely progress and it’s little wonder then that they trade at just 1.031/33 to qualify.
In the outright betting Bayern, the reigning champions, are just 3.02/1 to win this year’s final. Optimistic Gooners might want to have a few quid on the north London side at 150.0149/1.
The night’s other match pits Atletico Madrid against AC Milan at the Vicente Calderon with the Spanish side in possession of a 1-0 first leg lead. Diego Simeone’s unexpected Primera Liga contenders are the competition dark horses at 17.016/1 and they look to have one foot in the last-eight up against a mid-table Milan side.
With just a slim lead to protect Simeone may ask his team to go for it from the off in an attempt to put the tie to bed. Considering they have won 11 and drawn three of their 14 top flight games and all three of their Champions League group fixtures Atletico don’t look the worst 1.528/15 shots we have ever seen.
Wednesday night could see more Premier League pain with Manchester City in Barcelona attempting to fight back from a 2-0 first leg deficit
