Introduction

Chelsea host Southampton with the away side having had a particularly difficult run of fixtures in the Premier League. They will certainly not relish this trip to Stamford Bridge, given the fact that Chelsea have begun to head in the right direction in recent fixtures. A 3-0 win over West Ham indicated the quality that is inherent in this Chelsea squad, and they will expect to see of the Saints, despite their excellent start to the season.

Winner

Southampton are certainly a capable side, as they’ve proved with their start to the season. But the home side are a very intimidating proposition at the Bridge, and naturally start as overwhelming favourites. The Saints are more than capable of getting a result here, but losing at Arsenal, particularly the manner of it with two avoidable goals having been conceded, must have hurt their confidence a little, and I expect Chelsea to win here.

The Blues have looked a little shaky at the back at times this season, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Southampton got on the scoresheet. But I think Chelsea will nick a goal in either half and manage to come out on top by two goals to one.

It’s always a difficult call to decide who will open the scoring in Chelsea games, as they rotate their forwards regularly, and none of them are exactly prolific. Their midfield is also very interchangeable, with Frank Lampard, who scored two against West Ham, likely to be rested here. Thus, I’m once again tipping the one man who is the first name on the team sheet.
