City Away Day Form is Cause for Concern
Manchester City are making a slightly better fist of their Champions League challenge this time out. When I say “slightly better”, their results have been a considerable improvement, but their performance in coming from behind to defeat CSKA Moscow by two goals to one will not have convinced anyone other than one-eyed optimists that the team is heading in the right direction.
At times, City’s defending, shorn of their talismanic captain Vincent Kompany, was little short of dreadful. Pellegrini’s experiment of persisting with Javi Garcia as a centre-back ahead of Joleon Lescott must surely be abandoned, as Garcia looked about as comfortable there as Bambi would in an international skating competition.
City now find themselves in a position where they put their season on track in the next few weeks, with some big games giving them the opportunity to establish themselves as premier Premier League contenders, and a last 16 Champions League qualifier for the first time. But if they continue to leak goals away from home, neither ambition will last very long.
