City go One Better than Last Year
Manchester City will have been relieved that when the draw for the Champions League group stages was made, they weren’t placed in yet another ‘group of death’. For the first time in three seasons, City look to have a relatively easy passage to the knockout stages ahead of them, and this was emphasised by their first fixture in this year’s competition, as the Premier League champions of two seasons ago saw off Viktoria Plzen rather easily by three goals to nil.
Both City strikers, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, scored on the night, giving City coach Manuel Pellegrini a genuine selection problem for Sunday’s Manchester derby, with Alvaro Negredo also pushing for inclusion. However, this will be the least of the Spaniard’s concerns at the moment, as City have finally got off to the sort of start in the Champions League that should put qualification in their hands for once.
