Could di Canio be Next West Ham Boss?
The shock news that wasn’t a shock came out today that Paolo di Canio had left his position as Swindon Town manager. This hardly came as a huge surprise, even if it was extremely bad news for the Swindon faithful, as di Canio had threatened to resign for some time, citing board intervention. It would appear that this is the factor that finally brought his tenure at the County Ground to an end.
Speculation will now begin regarding di Canio’s next move. The Italian had been hugely successful with the Robins, first taking them out of English football’s bottom flight, and then guiding them to a potential promotion place in this season’s League one table.
With West Ham United having recently made it clear that they will not discuss manager Sam Allardyce’s position until the end of the season, despite the Hammers relatively strong showing in the Premier League, there is a strong argument that di Canio could end up back at his former club. The mercurial and passionate Italian was a hugely popular figure during his time at Upton Park, and was without doubt one of the club’s greatest ever players.
With many Hammers fans ambivalent towards West Ham’s style of play under Allardyce, their could be a very strong groundswell of opinion in his favour, particularly if the performances of the Hammers don’t improve between now and the end of the season.
