The topsy-turvy nature of this Premier League season probably dictated that Everton would lose at home to lowly opposition just when they looked to be in the driving seat to secure a top four finish. Their surrender at the hands of Crystal Palace means that Arsenal are now strong favourites to obtain Champions League qualification once again, especially as the Toffees must still face both Manchester clubs in the run in.

They begin by playing United at home on Sunday, and while it has undoubtedly been a dismal season for the away side, they do bizarrely boast the best away record in the Premier League. So this will be far from easy for Everton, despite having won this fixture last season.

On that occasion Marouane Fellaini scored the winner and looked a handful, yet the Belgian midfielder has had a pretty disastrous time since signing for United. Whether he will start here in an atmosphere in which former Everton manager David Moyes is likely to get a frosty reception is doubtful, but it could provide an interesting subtext to the game.

Everton now find themselves once again in their favoured and familiar position of being underdogs, and this may suit them in this game against United. It seems unlikely that the Toffees will secure Champions League football, but they have generally been a formidable side at Goodison this season, and I think they'll see off a United team who have little left to play for.
