Manchester United's league season has been close to a disaster so far, and any realistic hopes of a title challenge seem to have disappeared already. After four defeats at Old Trafford already this season, United must instead concentrate on attempting to claim a Champions League place, which will be essential to their prospects in the immediate future. Already David Moyes has admitted that Wayne Rooney could leave if they don't achieve a top four finish.

Thus, United need to get back to winning ways immediately in this League Cup tie against a Sunderland side who have a massive battle on their hands to stay in the Premier League. Bottom of the table, with only one win in their last nine league games, and having won two and lost seven Premier League games at the Stadium of Light, the omens don't look particularly good for the Black Cats coming into this one. But they may reflect that there could be worse times to be playing United.

Ironically, United's away form has been amongst the best in the division, and I think this is a clear pointer that the defending champions will win this one. The League Cup may represent David Moyes' best chance of picking up a trophy in his debut season, which would provide a modicum of relief for the Scot.

United actually played quite well against Tottenham in their previous fixture, and I fancy them to win with some comfort.
