Daily Dynamo Selections – Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund
The German Cup Final is always a big occasion, but when it features arguably the two biggest rivals in the league then it is sure to be an even more keenly contested encounter.
Such are the expectations nowadays at the Allianz Arena, Pep Guardiola's first season in charge of Die Bayern will be considered something of a failure even if this fixture results in Bayern pulling off a league and cup double. One would think winning the league emphatically coupled with cup success and a Champions League semi-final place would be enough to satiate any supporters, particularly as Bayern have been awesome in the league, wrapping it up literally months before the end of the season.
But the emphatic nature with which Real Madrid brushed Bayern aside on their home turf, coupled with rumours of dressing-room rumblings regarding Guardiola's favoured tiqui-taca style mean that all is not as well as it should be in Munich. Guardiola is not even certain to be the head coach at the Allianz next season, which would surely represent a unique occurrence of a manager winning a double and being effectively sacked should it occur!
Dortmund are a more than decent side, who are capable of playing some brilliant football at times, and they would love nothing more than to put one over on their great rivals, which they managed to do in the league just weeks ago. But Bayern have been far too good for everyone in the Bundesliga when it has mattered this term, and I expect them to give another powerful display here to complete a league and cup double.
