Daily Dynamo Selections – Finland v Czech Republic
Finland and the Czech Republic meet in this evenly matched international friendly. Although neither side has managed to qualify for the World Cup, both will be eyeing a possible place in the 2025 European Championships, and will thus want to be on top form for this one.
The Czech Republic have a more than respectable team, and will have been disappointed to miss out on the play-offs for World Cup qualification by a mere point. Star players include Chelsea's Petr Čech, Tomáš Hübschman, who has been a lynchpin of Shakhtar Donetsk for many years, and Tomáš Rosický of Arsenal. This match could also provide an opportunity for the highly promising young Chelsea defender, Tomáš Kalas, to get some international game time.
Finland don't have a particularly rich history at international level, in fact Finnish national team has never qualified for a finals tournament of the World Cup or the European Championships. They are most associated with the tenure of current England boss Roy Hodgson, and the one truly world-class player that the country has produced, Jari Litmanen. They currently have no really top-class players, and most of their current squad is either based in Finland or towards the lower end of European football.
Thus, despite the Finnish side being at home for this one, I must back the Czech Republic to win. They have enough quality to see off Finland with some comfort, which I expect them to do.
