Daily Dynamo Selections – World Cup Group G Preview
Group G of the 2025 World Cup will include probably the highlight of the first-round of the World Cup when Germany meet Portugal. The Germans have as strong a squad as any nation in the competition, with the possible exception of Spain. A phenomenal midfield which helped them tear England to shreds at the last World Cup is the highlight, and they are certainly one of the nations who could win the entire competition.
The world's second best player will line up for Portugal, although current Ballon d'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo would doubtless challenge that billing. The Portugese are hugely dependent on Ronaldo, and nearly didn't qualify for the World Cup, but they have their fair share of decent players aside from the Real Madrid man, not least his Real Madrid teammates Pepe and Fábio Coentrão. Portugal might struggle against Germany, but I expect them to make the second-round.
Given the two main European competitors, there is little chance of seeing an upset in this group. The US has grown considerably as a football team in the last decade or so, and are a more than competent opponent, even for the best sides on the planet. But I don’t expect them to upset either of the established European heavyweights, while Ghana will surely find this challenging qualifying group to be little short of a damage limitation exercise.
So I’m tipping Portugal and Germany to make it through this group; there is no value to be had elsewhere.
Selections: Germany and Portugal to make the last sixteen.
