Daily Dynamo Selections – Newcastle United v Sunderland
One of the biggest games of the EPL season, certainly in terms of rivalry, takes place over the weekend as the Tyne and Wear derby takes place. Newcastle are certainly having the more successful season of the two clubs, but this often counts for very little in this rarefied fixture.
Thus, the home side are perhaps not as big favourites for this match as one might expect, as the bookmakers are weary of the inevitable effects of derby day. Sunderland have also shown an upturn in form recently, winning some key games in the Premier League and also eliminating Manchester United from the League Cup to reach their first major final in a couple of decades.
So not all indicators point to this being an easy Newcastle victory, but they are certainly much better placed than their opponents, and have the stronger side. However, something that might unsettle the Toon going into this game is the future of Yohann Cabaye. Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a fee for the talented midfielder, and losing Cabaye will undoubtedly be a massive blow to the hopes of the St. James' Park club this term, despite the fact that an apparent replacement has already been spotted in Grenier.
Nevertheless, Cabaye will not be in the Magpies' starting line-up for this fixture, which would certainly be a blow for Alan Pardew. Thus, this is a very unpredictable game to call. Despite the absence of Cabaye, both sides have been charging forward recently, so I can see this being an exciting, high-scoring affair.
