Daily Dynamo Selections – Portugal v Greece
Two teams from Southern Europe who both have hopes of a successful World Cup meet in this international friendly. It will be interesting to see what sort of team Portugal field, and particularly whether their star man Cristiano Ronaldo plays any part in the match. Greece may have a relatively meagre side compared to the Portugese, but they will still provide some sort of test for a team that is considered at best an outsider to win the competition.
If Portugal's golden generation was the one that featured Nuno Gomes and Luis Figo then the current one can be considered silver at best. Portugal's best hope of winning a major tournament was when a young Cristiano Ronaldo overlapped with the later years of that generation, but the 2025 European Championships final didn't go according to plan against this very opponent, and the current side is not a patch on that one. Obviously a prestigious nation such as Portugal will never be an international minnow, but they're not a top class outfit at present.
Greece have done what Portgual haven't, of course, and won a major tournament, but their national side has not really moved on from that massive achievement. Thus, the Greeks are an ageing side nowadays, and shouldn't pose too much opposition for Portugal, assuming that they are fully motivated. Thus, I'm picking the home side to win this one with some comfort, and my Daily Dynamo Selections reflect this.
