Daily Dynamo Selections – Rayo Vallecano v Athletic Bilbao
Athletic Bilbao can all but confirm their place in next season's Champions League by winning against mid-table Rayo Vallecano on Friday evening. It has been a good season for Bilbao after a disappointing campaign last year, and English teams in particular may wish to avoid them in next season's European competition, given the fact that they pasted Manchester United just a couple of seasons ago.
There are certainly easier fixtures in the division for Bilbao to face in order to confirm their place in Europe's premier club competition. Rayo Vallecano are actually in pretty decent form, and have a better points return from their last five matches than Bilbao. Rayo can be a tough side to face on their home turf and Bilbao will have their work cut out to pick up three points here.
Rayo do have a rather bizarre home record this season. They have yet to draw a single match, having won eight and lost nine. The odds of this occurring must be pretty astronomical, yet it gives an indication that they have been rather inconsistent. Bilbao are much stronger at home than they are on the road, but have still picked up six away wins in La Liga.
Given the law of averages and the odds offered, not to mention the fact that the two teams come into this match in similar form…I like the draw here. It seems to offer good odds, and a point would be far from a disaster for Bilbao.
