Daily Dynamo Selections – Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid
The most important fixture in European football is left to the very end of the season, as the Champions League final takes place in Lisbon's Estádio da Luz. And the Portugese capital could hardly be playing host to a bigger and more tense occasion.
Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid is of course a massive fixture under any circumstances. But what Atletico Madrid have achieved this season, and what Real are trying to achieve, ensures that this is possibly the biggest match that these great rivals have ever played.
Real are chasing the so-called Decima. This is their tenth victory in Europe's premier club competition, with Los Blancos having won nine European Cups and Champions League titles previously. The club has been craving the Decima for many years, and if they manage to finally secure it this season, then coach Carlo Ancelotti will likely be forgiven a forgettable league campaign.
Atletico, of course, have had anything but a forgettable league campaign. No-one really gave them the remotest chance of breaking the El Clasico stranglehold on the title at the start of the season, bu that is precisely the incredible achievement that they've pulled off.
During the campaign, Atletico got the better of Real in the league, but Los Blancos gave Atleti a bit of a hammering in the Copa del Rey. Much in this game may hinge on the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo, who looks set to miss the game with a niggling injury.
Regardless of whether the Portugese plays, I just feel that the wind is in Atletico's sails after they drew at the Camp Nou to secure the title, and I think they might just edge this one.
