Daily Dynamo Selections – Schalke v Hertha Berlin
Despite their humiliation in this season's Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, Schalke are still pushing for a place in next season's premier European competition. Currently lying third in the table, it looks as if their travails may not go unrewarded as well.
This home fixture against the mid-table Hertha Berlin will be looked upon as a solid three point opportunity, although Hertha have a pretty solid defensive record. In fact, the away side for this fixture has actually conceded less goals this season than Schalke, despite being some 18 points behind them in the Bundesliga standings.
However, Schalke have the more potent attack of the two sides, and both Julian Draxler and Klaas Jan Huntelaar have enjoyed good seasons. One would struggle to find a better forward line outside of the truly elite European clubs, and Schalke would love to hold on to Draxler for one more season, although with numerous Premier League clubs rumoured to be interested in him, this would seem to be extremely unlikely.
Despite Hertha's decent away record this season – they have in fact picked up more points than at home – I have to make Schalke favourites to win here, particularly as the Berlin club have lost two on the bounce going into this game. So my Daily Dynamo Selections for this fixture reflect my conclusions here, which is that Schalke will come out on top with some comfort.
Selections – Safe bet – Schalke to win (4/5 with Paddy Power), Value Bet – Schalke to win by 2 goals (9/2 with Paddy Power)
