Daily Dynamo Selections – World Cup Group H Preview
Group H features one of the dark horses for this year’s World Cup, and a nation that English football supporters are particularly familiar with.
From back-to-front Belgium have outstanding players. In goal, Thibaut Courtois has has an outstanding season with Atlético Madrid. At the back, Vincent Kompany is the best centre-back in the English league, and one of the best in the world. In midfield, Eden Hazard is one of the most highly-rated creative players in the world. And Romelu Lukaku is coming into the World Cup on the back of an outstanding season for Everton, during which he scored fifteen Premier League goals.
If there were doubts how Belgium would cope with playing in South American conditions then the teams drawn with them in their qualifying group will be cause for comfort. Russia are a more than competent outfit, and Belgium are by no means guaranteed to beat them. But it would be a surprise if they are more than also-rans in the World Cup, and the Belgians could certainly have been drawn against tougher European competition.
Elsewhere, South Korea and Algeria surely won’t have the requisite quality to trouble either Russia or Belgium. The Algerians do have one established Premier League player in Nabil Bentaleb. But neither looks to have the calibre or pedigree required to qualify for the next stage, and this is one qualifying group in the Brazilian tournament where I expect there to be very few surprises.
Selections: Belgium and Russia to qualify for the last sixteen
