Disappointing Premier League Season
Although Manchester United must be given credit for the almost inevitable regaining of the Champions League title from neighbours and rivals Manchester City, the reality is that this has been a pretty mediocre Premier League campaign.
Manchester City are currently on target to collect ten points less than last season, and about twenty goals less. Chelsea have had a torrid time. Arsenal will be lucky to scrape a place in the top four. Liverpool are nowhere near being a competitive team. Newcastle have been nowhere near the force they were last season. And there are no English teams in the last eight of the Champions League.
It is often argued that the Premier League has more depth than any other division. In fact, Manchester United are on course to break the Premier League points record, and if they don’t achieve this they will almost certainly break their own record points total. Despite the assertion that is often put forward that the Premier League is the best league in the world because the top sides get a tough game every week, the league leaders have only dropped points against teams in the bottom half of the table twice this season. Since losing against Everton on the opening day, United have won 24 out of 28 Premier League games, despite looking decidedly mediocre at times.
In short, it’s hard to believe the hype on the evidence of this campaign.
