Dortmund and Bayern Draw in CL Final Rehearsal
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund warmed up for their forthcoming Champions League final by playing out a pretty bad tempered 1-1 draw in Dortmund on Sunday. The home side rested numerous players for the match, with the league title already decided, but this didn’t prevent them from taking an early lead through Kevin Großkreutz. Bayern predictably battled back, though, and equalised through Mario Gomez.
In an eventful and tetchy game, Rafinha was then sent off for the newly crowned Bundesliga champions, meaning that they were to play the rest of the game with ten men. This looked to have lead to a Dortmund victory when they earned a second-half penalty, but Robert Lewandowski’s spot kick was surprisingly saved.
Dortmund are one of the few teams in Europe that Bayern may be slightly weary of at the moment, as they retain a very creditable record against their rivals. While Munich are far too good to fear anyone, this was another reminder that Dortmund are more than capable of winning the forthcoming Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.
This would be a bitter pill for Bayern to swallow, particularly as they have lost five of their last six European Cup finals. It is surprising for such a great club, but there history in Europe has been one of near misses, particularly in recent decades. They will hope to put that right at Wembley.
