Dortmund are Europe’s Best Supported Club
Having won two consecutive Bundesliga titles, this season has been a slight disappointment for Borussia Dortmund, despite their success in the Champions League. The club has no chance of retaining their German title, with Bayern Munich some 20 points ahead of them at the head of the Bundesliga table.
However, a crumb of comfort for the club was the recent news that it is the best supported club in Europe, in terms of average attendance, surpassing the European giants of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are in the next three positions, and compatriots Bayern, who are fifth.
In fact, Borussia is the only football club in the world that can boast an average attendance of over 80,000, with their home games being attended by an average of 5,000 more than any other club in Europe.
The full list gives some indication of the health of the Bundesliga in terms of fan participation. With the top and fifth highest supported teams on the list, Schalke 04 are the next highest after Bayern Munich with Hamburger SV in eighth, and two more German clubs, VFB Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach taking up eleventh and twelfth slots respectively. It is open to debate whether or not German or English football is the best supported in Europe, but both leagues’ attendances show healthy signs.
