Downing in North East Return as Busy Reds Window Continues
If Liverpool fans had to cope with a distinct lack of activity during last season’s summer transfer window, this is at least one complaint that they cannot legitimately launch after the same period this summer. Brendan Rodgers has taken the opportunity to bring numerous players into Anfield, as well as shipping several out, and if the ongoing saga of Luis Suarez has perhaps overshadowed this, the club can at least be satisfied that their squad depth is considerably stronger than last season.
The latest deal mooted at Anfield involved Stewart Downing. The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough winger has been something of a fringe player for some time now, and it is reported by the Daily Telegraph today that Downing could be on his way back to his native north east to sign for Newcastle. The Guardian confirms that Liverpool are ready to take a £15 million hit on a player that they signed two years ago.
With one forward on his way out of the club, the Daily Mirror reports that the Reds bid for a possible replacement for Downing, Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid, has stalled for the time being.
