English National Team in Big Trouble
After one month of the summer Premier League transfer window being open, the chances of one of the top clubs in the Premier League signing an Englishman looks pretty remote, unless Manchester United manage to tie up a deal for Everton’s Leighton Baines. Arsenal look likely to complete the signing of Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain in the next 24 hours, Manchester City have already tied up deals for Spaniard Jesus Navas and Brazilian Fernandinho. Chelsea have brought in Dutchman Marco van Ginkel and German Andre Schurrle, while Tottenham have made Brazilian Paulinho their first signing of the summer. Liverpool have swooped for a couple of Spaniards in Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas, and have also brought in the Ivorian Kolo Toure and Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet.
Manchester United want Spaniard Thiago Alcantara, Chelsea are chasing the Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, Manchester City have also been linked with Cavani, and may also move for Paraguayan Oscar Cardozo or Spaniard Alvaro Negredo, Arsenal want the Belgian Marouane Fellaini…where is the English talent?
It is a sorry reflection on the young talent, or lack thereof, in the English game that none of the Premier League’s top teams is remotely interested in signing an English player seemingly, with the exception of one 28 year-old left-back. The England team’s future looks pretty bleak.
