Enter Messi the Maestro
Barcelona have looked a little sluggish in recent games; shorn of their mercurial Argentinian leader, and with little motivation to be at their best, given the walkover that the Spanish League has been this season.
But with Lionel Messi returning this evening against Bayern Munich, the Catalans will hope to fire on all cylinders against the most testing of opposition. It is certainly difficult to recall a more keenly anticipated fixture in recent footballing history.
Messi is absolutely central to everything that Barcelona do, and he showed earlier in this season’s Champions League against AC Milan just what he can do to a top class side when given the opportunity. Having had a couple of week’s rest in order to recover from injury, Messi should be at his absolute peak of performance for the Champions League tie, and there is no doubt that the Munich defence will have to shackle him very closely if they wish to progress to their second consecutive final.
The Argentine seems to break a new record every month, but if he manages to score twice against Bayern, then he is already the second highest goalscorer in Champions League history, with Messi currently on 59 goals in the competition. I think it’s fair to say that he will definitely overhaul Raul, and probably become the first player to score 100 Champions League goals eventually.
