Lewandowski signs five-year Bayern deal

The Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has signed for Bayern Munich, the latter club has confirmed, ending speculation that his next move would be to a leading Premier League side. The prolific Polish striker will see out the rest of his contract with Dortmund before joining the European champions in the summer. After a medical in Munich, Lewandowski signed a five-year contract, keeping him at Bayern until June 2025. The chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, was delighted with the deal, saying on Bayern’s website: “Robert Lewandowski is one of the world’s best strikers, he will strengthen the squad and give us a boost.”

Koke’s Atlético bubbling

A second-half goal from Koke gave Atlético Madrid a 1-0 win over Málaga to send them top of La Liga. With Barcelona not restarting their season until Sunday after the Christmas break, Atlético took advantage to move three points clear of Barça. Atlético lacked a cutting edge, but Koke finally made the breakthrough, slotting the ball home after Willy Caballero saved from Adrián López. Atlético now have 49 points from 18 games, although Barcelona can return to the top with victory at home against Elche. Real Madrid, who are eight points adrift, face Celta Vigo on Monday.

Derby prospect stays

Will Hughes, one of the most promising teenagers in English football and a player courted by a number of the top Premier League clubs, will not be leaving Derby County in this transfer window. Sam Rush, Derby’s chief executive, insisted the Championship club has no intention of selling the 18-year-old midfielder, who will have a chance to shine on the big stage on Sunday, when Chelsea visit the iPro Stadium in the FA Cup third round.
