This is a truly golden era for German football at the club level, and has naturally lead the German national team to having a very formidable line-up. But the German people will not consider it anything like golden until its national team actually win a major competition. While this German side has played some of the most attractive football of any German team, they have yet to win a major trophy, and will be wanting to put this failing to bed as soon as possible.

On home turf, they are a withering side to face, and Ireland would usually settle for a point here. However, in qualification terms this would be absolutely useless to the visitors, so Ireland must push for an unlikely victory here.
