How Will Barca Cope Without Messi?
Lionel Messi has often been accused of being reliant on the creative brilliance of Xavi and Andres Iniesta to create chances for him, and it has even been implied that he wouldn’t be half the player without them.
To say this is rather unfair would be something of an understatement. Messi is simply a phenomenal player who does so much for Barcelona in addition to the torrent of goals that he contributes. The Catalan team’s style of play is largely reliant on his ability to find space between the defence and midfield and either create chances for others, or score himself, often out of nothing.
The assertion that Barca are not reliant on Messi will be tested seriously over the weekend, when they line up without him in La Liga. But it would be even more microscopically examined should he miss the second-leg of their Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain. Suddenly if Barca find themselves in a difficult spot, they won’t have the Argentinian genius to do something brilliant and change the game for them.
It will be interesting to see how they cope without him, but what can be said for certain is that everything will be done to get Messi back for the PSG game.
