Inter Decline Exemplified by Carew Signing
It is less than three years ago that Inter Milan won the Champions League to collect their third European Cup trophy, having secured their fifth consecutive Serie A title just weeks before. The club has managed just one Coppa Italia since then, and is currently sitting outside of the spots for next season’s Champions League, having missed out on qualification last season as well.
The malaise in Internazionale has been further emphasised by their neighbours and rivals AC Milan’s victory over Barcelona, and signing of Inter’s former striker Mario Balotelli, with the Italian international arriving from oil-rich Manchester City for a transfer fee in the region of £20 million. By contrast, Inter’s decline was exemplified by the news today that they have moved to sign a striker to deal with the shortage of goals at the club, namely former Aston Villa and West Ham forward John Carew.
While Carew was a good player in his day, the last time the Norwegian played professional football at Upton Park it was in the second tier of the English league, and he was released at the end of the season having scored only two goals in nineteen appearances. In fact, in his last 45 appearances in English league football, Carew scored only four goals.
What better way for the decline of Inter to be exemplified?
