Lewandowski Exit Set in Stone
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that their much sought after Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, will not be extending his contract, effectively rubber stamping his exit from the club. However, Dortmund claimed that the player will not necessarily leave during this summer, and could be made to stay in Germany until the end of the 2025-14 season.
The news completed a pretty dismal 24 hours for the defending Bundesliga champions, as they exited the German Cup at the hands of their great rivals Bayern Munich, losing to a solitary goal scored by Arjen Robben.
While the Borussia hierarchy are attempting to play hardball over the situation, the likelihood of Lewandowski staying in Dortmund for another season would look to be pretty remote. Several of Europe’s top clubs will have been alerted by this news, with Bayern themselves said to be interested, and Manchester United also supposedly keeping tabs on the player. Barcelona too may look towards Lewndowski as a replacement for the misfiring Alexis Sanchez.
With the gulf between Germany’s top two teams already evident, this is something of a blow for the competitiveness of the league. What is also certain is that Dortmund will have a tough job on their hands to replace the Pole, who has scored 51 goals for the club during the last two seasons.
