Liverpool v Manchester United – Premier League Preview and Betting Tip
This week sees arguably the biggest Premier League fixture of all, as Manchester United travel to Liverpool for what is the most passionate, and sometimes bitter, of rivalries in the Premier League. The home side’s Premier League season has begun promisingly, with Brendan Rodgers’ side picking up two solid 1-0 wins in their first two fixtures of this campaign. Manchester United are still settling into the David Moyes era, but a 4-1 win at Swansea and home draw secured against Chelsea will be viewed as a reasonable return from their Premier League programme thus far. This is certain to be an extremely hard fought affair, and may very well be a stormy and tempestuous occasion as well.
Winner
The bookmakers make Liverpool very slight favourites to win this match, which reflects their excellent start to the season, along with the uncertainty that currently surrounds Manchester United under David Moyes. It is hard to imagine an Alex Ferguson team being second favourites to win here, particularly in recent years, but no-one is quite sure what to expect from the perennial Premier League champions as of yet under the former Everton manager. It seems fairly likely, though, that Moyes will adopt a quite cautious approach, as he would doubtless settle for five points from what have been three tough fixtures at the start of his Manchester United career. Liverpool’s first two games have also been very tight, featuring only two goals, so I can see this being a very cagey affair indeed, with a great deal at stake for both teams. It seems obvious to go for the draw here, particular as it’s the bookies outsider. Best odds available are 12/5 with BetVictor.
Correct Score
Very rarely do Manchester United play out two consecutive 0-0 draws, so I would instantly rule that possibility out, if only due to the law of averages. On the other hand, I can’t see this being a high scoring affair, so I’ll tip the final scoreline to be Liverpool 1 – 1 Manchester United. Best odds available are 13/2 with BetVictor.
Under / Over 2.5 Goals
In accordance with my previous tip, I’m going for the under 2.5 goals bet in this market. Best odds available are 20/21 with Stan James.
Winning Margin
I don’t believe that there will be a winning margin in this fixure, the score draw can be had at 17/5 with BetVictor.
First Goalscorer
Obviously, the tempting bet in this market is always Robin van Persie, who is such a focus of United’s attacking play, and can be backed at odds of 9/2 with Coral. However, Daniel Sturridge has begun the season in outstanding form, is available at more generous odds than van Persie, and will be buoyed by a passionate Anfield crowd. So I’m going to tip Sturridge for this market, best odds available are 6/1 with Coral.
