Manchester City are currently in the odd position of having a huge weight of expectation placed on them because of the money that the club has at its disposal, but of having a fanbase with realistic expectations due to decade of malaise and suffering. Thus, should City manage to secure the FA Cup with victory over Wigan Athletic on Saturday, the season will not be viewed as a failure, at least not among their supporters, despite palpably failing in the two premier competitions that the club entered into at the start of the season.

Sheikh Mansour did not take over the Eastlands-based club to win the FA Cup, he clearly intended for the club to compete at the top table, and particularly in European competition. If Roberto Mancini has yet to deliver this, he may still be forgiven purely due to his record of winning trophies in consecutive seasons. Should he make that three seasons in successcion during which City have won a trophy, then once can reasonably expect him to still be at the City helm come the start of next season.

Wigan will take a break from what looks like their increasingly forlorn battle against relegation to compete for a trophy that was certainly unimaginable at the start of the season. The usual cliches about ‘enjoying the day out’ and such like will count for little for the Latics, particularly as if they lose this match, the bitter pill that they have to swallow may have to be washed down with another dose of sour medicine in a few weeks time, when they lose their Premier League status.

Manchester City rested most of their first team in the 1-0 win over West Brom, and will recall them for this final. Wigan probably won’t make many changes to the team that lost 3-2 at home to Swansea just days ago.

I can’t see too much changing in this match, City have the big match players and temperament, and Wigan have a dodgy defence.
