Messi Fitness Concern for Barca
The continued ailments of Lionel Messi will be a headache for Barcelona this morning, after the world’s best player limped out of Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa.
Messi had been struggling with a niggling injury at the end of last season, and recently missed Argentina’s 2-1 win over Italy. At half-time against Atletico, Messi again limped off to be replaced at half-time by Cesc Fabregas, apparently a hamstring strain the reason for Messi’s lameness on this occasion, according to Orangeworld. Although, ESPN reports that the injury is in fact a knock to the Argentine’s thigh.
It will be encouraging for Barcelona that Neymar scored his first goal for the club, and could be an able deputy for Messi, should the 26 year-old striker miss any further matches. But in what is sure to be an intense battle with Real this season, new coach Martino will not feel secure in the prospects of his team until Messi is fit on a regular and consistent basis.
