Messi Sets Yet Another Record
Lionel Messi smashed yet another La Liga record, when he scored twice to help Barcelona come from behind to beat Granada by two goals to one. This signified the fourteenth consecutive La Liga fixture in which Messi has scored for Barca, extending his own record by a further game. At present, it’s hard to guess when the run will end.
In addition, the 49th minute equaliser against Granada was Messi’s 300th goal for Barcelona. To achieve such a mark aged 25 is quite staggering, when one considers that the player to whom Messi is most often compared, Diego Maradona, only scored ten more club goals in his entire career than Messi has managed so far.
Perhaps a long-term goal for Messi could be Gerd Muller’s all-time European career scoring record of 617 goals. Pele’s official total of 643 goals in club football could also be achievable.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are running away with La Liga, fifteen points clear of Atletico Madrid and nineteen clear of Real Madrid before today’s La Liga programme is played. Furthermore, if Barca manage to win twelve of their last fourteen league games, an achieveable goal for a team of their quality, then they will eclipse Real Madrid’s record Liga points total which was set just last season. They also need to average three goals per league fixtures until the end of the season to break Madrid’s record goalscoring total, which was also set during the last campaign.
