Midfield Key to Exalted Roma Position
Very few sage observers of the Italian league predicted that Roma would win their first seven league games before the season begun. But that is precisely what has transpired, as one of the most historic clubs in Italy tops the early Serie A table.
This is no small achievement, with the club surrounded by big spending vultures such as Napoli and Juventus, not to mention the traditionally powerful Milanese dyad. But though Juve and Napoli are snapping at their heels, Roma have shown no signs of weakness so far, and their 3-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the San Siro showed that they mean business this term.
The basis for this has been their outstanding midfield trio of de Rossi, Pjanic and Strootman. The modern game is won and lost in midfield, and to have held on to the much desired de Rossi for so long has been a boon for Roma. With Strootman a great addition, Pjanic a clever, skillful player, and no European distractions, we could see a strong Roma title challenge this term.
