Napoli End of Season Review
Napoli greatly improved on their 2025-12 Serie A season, in a campaign in which they offered the most creditable challenge to Juventus’ dominance at the top of Serie A. If the Naples-based club never seriously threatened to dethrone the Old Lady of Italian football, this was perhaps too much to expect from a team that ended the previous campaign in fifth positon. A second place finish was thus a significant improvement for a team that last won the Serie A title when Diego Armando Maradona featured among their ranks.
One would like to say that the future is bright for Napoli, but it probably isn’t. The reliance that this relatively small club has had on the goals of Edinson Cavani, who has netted seventy times in the last two seasons, means that the fact that the Uruguayan striker is highly likely to seek pastures new in the summer will be a big blow for the club. Whether Napoli can hope to replace Cavani adequately remains to be seen.
Nonetheless, a guaranteed Champions League place was achieved emphatically which would have realistically been the best that Napoli and its supporters could have hoped for at the beginning of the season. If a title challenge may not be forthcoming next season, fans at least have participation in Europe’s premier club competition to look forward to.
