Old Order Restored in La Liga
Despite an excellent season, during which they have been sandwiched between El Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid for large parts, Atletico Madrid look set to finish third in the league after all, as they failed to pick up their fourteenth home win of the season out of fourteen in La Liga. By losing 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad, Atletico were finally leapfrogged by their bitter rivals Real Madrid, meaning that the odds are on Jose Mourinho’s men finishing ahead of Atletico in a La Liga that has been dominated by Barca.
With Atletico already having crashed out of the Europa League at the hands of Rubin Kazan, the reality is that their season is largely over, although they won’t give up on the fight to usurp Real just yet. What will be of greater concern to Atletico fans is that despite the fact that he has professed to be happy at the club, the likelihood that star striker Radamel Falcao will head off for pastures new in the summer must be high. It seems unlikely that a player of his undoubted ability and class will be happy to turn out indefinitely for a team that simply isn’t likely to compete for Spain nor Europe’s top honours.
