Premier League Clubs Stroll in Europa League
The Europa League has long since been considered the unenviable European competition to be involved in for a variety of reasons, most obviously that Europe’s most glittering elite do not participate, generally speaking. Thus, the competition has not had the best of reputations over recent seasons, with many clubs considering the lengthy competition to be more of a needless headache than an exciting European stage.
This evening’s fixtures involving English clubs will not greatly have relieved this impression. Firstly, Tottenham won by five goals to nil in Tblisi, an encouraging result for the North London club without doubt, but one achieved against the most meagre of opposition.
Then just to show that this wasn’t a fluke, Swansea put five goals past Petrolul Poiesti in their Europa League bow.
While the competition offers an incentive for some of the mid-table sides in the Premier League to have something to aim for, the fact remains that this is a bloated competition that needs some direct and swift action from UEFA to revitalise it.
