Man Utd v Liverpool – Premier League Preview and Betting Tips
Sunday sees arguably the biggest fixture of the season in the Premier League season, as Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford. Although Liverpool have offered little resistance to United in terms of league position in recent seasons, this is still considered United’s most important league fixture of the season, despite the oil money funded rise of Manchester City. Indeed, Paul Scholes confirmed precisely that this week, in a comment that was reported by some media as a ‘slight’ against City. It was nothing of the sort, it was simply a recognition of the enmity felt toward one another by the supporters of the two clubs, which while at timed distasteful, is nonetheless the sort of passion on which football has been built historically. It guarantees the sort of atmosphere, pride and stakes that will make this match the most watched in the world this week, and possibly the most watched match in the world, although Real-Barca may even slightly supersede it in this regard.
Of course, Manchester United have been phenomenally more successful than Liverpool in the Premier League era, capturing title after title while their Merseyside rivals have painfully watched their English record for the largest number of league title wins be slowly but irrevocably surpassed. There has been the odd moment of glory for the Reds in this fixture, with Fernando Torres pretty much humiliating Nemanja Vidic a few season back to hand the title to Chelsea, and the Anfield club racking up a few victories in the fixture that have placated their supporters feelings and sense of pride, if not their appetite for success.
But Liverpool supporters still consider their club to be one of the top clubs in England, if not Europe, and one that should be perennially challenging for English and European football’s grandest prizes. One would have to say, this image of the club is entirely based on a sense of entitlement at this point in time. While the team has improved this season, and has a good chance of securing European football, and may even conceivably challenge for a Champions League place, the gulf between England’s biggest club, United, and the Reds looks precisely gulf-like, and bridging it will be no less a gradual process than building a suspension bridge across the Grand Canyon. In short, it will not happen overnight.
Nonetheless, Liverpool go into this game on the back of a useful 3-0 win over Sunderland at Anfield, and may keep the same eleven. Daniel Sturridge will probably remain on the bench despite starting in the FA Cup win over Mansfield. United will recall Robin van Persie to the starting line-up after resting him at West Ham, and Sir Alex Ferguson tends to play his most experienced players in such big games, so this could mean a start for Paul Scholes ahead of Tom Cleverley. Van Persie made lead the line alone in front of a five-man midfield featuring Shinji Kagawa.
Manchester United (possible 4-2-3-1): de Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra; Carrick, Scholes; Young, Kagawa, Valencia; van Persie
Liverpool (possible 4-3-2-1): Reina; Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique; Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard; Sterling, Downing; Suarez
Betting Prediction: These derby games are rather difficult to predict, which makes me favour a low odds market for this fixture. With United’s defence being far from perfect this season, Liverpool having caved in rather meekly away from home at times this season, and the two top forwards in the Premier League on show, I rather fancy that the over 2.5 goals bet is a sound one in this fixture.
