Premier League Weekend Preview – 15/12/2025
Premier League Preview and Betting Tips
Having opened up a significant gap at the top of the Premier League table with their 3-2 victory over neighbours and rivals Manchester City, Manchester United will be looking to cement their grip on top slot with a home victory over struggling Sunderland. United may reflect that there could be better times to be playing the Black Cats then immediately after a morale boosting 3-0 win over Reading; Sunderland will probably consider a trip to Old Trafford to be poorly timed having just got back to winning ways. United will be expected to turn Sunderland over quite comfortably, but Martin O’ Neill teams should never be written off lightly.
City will attempt to recover from their defeat at the hands of United by travelling to face the north-east’s other major team Newcastle United. Like Sunderland, Newcastle are experiencing an underwhelming season with the expectations of the supporters following last season’s exceptional campaign being nowhere near met. If it wasn’t for the goalscoring form of Dema Ba, and occasional brilliance of Hatem ben Arfa, then Newcastle would probably find themselves in a direct relegation tussle. As it is, they need to start picking up some points in due course, but might find a strong Manchester City midfield are able to dominate the pattern of play in this game.
With Chelsea away on Club World Cup duty, Everton can go level on points with the Stamford Bridge club. Unfortunately for the Toffees, they face a very tough task if they wish to do so, needing to become the first team so far this season to beat Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke have, in fact, only even trailed once so far on home turf, when Papiss Cisse scored for Newcastle against them a few weeks ago, but Stoke came back to win that game. It gives some indication of how difficult Stoke make life for visiting teams that Manchester City’s Javier Garcia is the only other Premier League player to score at the Britannia so far this season. Thus, it’s always difficult to bet against the Potters when they’re at home, but Everton are well-equipped to at least get something from the game.
Arsenal experienced possibly the worst defeat of Arsene Wenger‘s entire tenure when they suffered the ignominy of defeat at the hands of Bradford City in mid-week. However, although the result has brought into sharper focus the position of Wenger and the direction that the club is heading in, the reality is that league position and Champions League performance will dictate Wenger’s future and Arsenal’s standing, not the League Cup. A win at Reading would move Arsenal up into the top six and onto the verge of the Champions League places, and this could be considered a reasonable position from which the Gunners can achieve their aim of securing Champions League football for the sixteenth consecutive season. Reading have looked relegation certainties virtually all season, and it’s hard to see them securing even a point from this fixture.

The Gunners’ North London rivals Tottenham are involved in what appears an attractive fixture at home to Michael Laudrup’s Swansea City this weekend. The Welsh club have received considerable plaudits, not merely for their results, but also for their style of play and commitment to passing the ball. The loss of Joe Allen, Scott Sinclair, and the on loan duo of Sigurdsson and Caulker, not to mention manager Brendan Rodgers, have not proved to be too costly, as the Swans have continued playing with the panache that the showed last season. And in Spanish forward Michu, they have made the signing of the season. However, Tottenham are also known as an open, attractive footballing side, and in Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe they have two of the Premier League season’s best players. Expect an open game which could go either way, although Spurs will fancy their chances.
Speaking of Brendan Rodgers, his Liverpool side have shown significant improvement in recent weeks, and the Reds 3-2 victory at West Ham United last time out while shorn of the services of star striker Luis Suarez has been considered a landmark one on Merseyside. It seems that after a sticky start to Rodgers’ reign, the Anfield club are heading in the right direction, and if they can secure a couple of decent signings during the January window, then the mood in the red half of Liverpool may swing increasingly toward one of optimism. On Saturday, Liverpool face a Villa side who have looked for most of the season like relegation candidates. However, Paul Lambert is steadily building a decent side with some good young players, and the triumvirate of Benteke, Bent and Weimann tore in-form Norwich to shreds in the League Cup in midweek. Liverpool may find Villa tougher opponents in this fixture than they may be expecting.
Norwich will try to recover from their mid-week disappointment with another fixture at Carrow Road, this week against the ever unpredictable Wigan Athletic. The Latics are not known for being good travellers, and the Canaries will be favourites to pick up an almost unprecedented sixth consecutive Premier League victory.
Queen’s Park Rangers are still seeking their first victory of this Premier League season, although they have shown some improvement under Harry Redknapp, and the former Tottenham manager is unbeaten in his short tenure of the club. A London derby at Loftus Road against Fulham might be viewed by Rangers as a fixture in which they have a reasonable chance of winning, although if Dimitar Berbatov comes in a good frame of mind to play, then the Cottagers can be quite a handful.

Finally, the two Wests, Brom and Ham, meet at the Hawthorns, with the home side’s excellent start to the season having been checked by three consecutive Premier League defeats. West Ham have also lost game in recent weeks, and both sides will want to get back to winning ways here. With Andy Carroll missing for the Hammers, the home side must be considered minor favourites to pick up three points.
