Pressure to Play Bale Immense
When you pay £90 million for a footballer, you don’t do it so that he can warm the bench. You especially don’t do it so that he can warm the bench in the world’s biggest football match.
Yet logic would dictate that this is precisely what Gareth Bale should do against Barcelona. He has not yet returned to full match sharpness and fitness. The team has been playing well without him. And why risk a half-fit, under-prepared player in the most important fixture of the season for Real Madrid?
The answer is that the history of Real Marid is rife with politics. At the Bernabeu, appearances are as important as substance, and the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti to start with the world’s most expensive player in the world’s most important fixture will be simply immense. Angel di Maria might very much fancy starting, but it is far more likely that a Welshman will begin the game on the right-wing.
